A Haunted House, But Make It Motherhood

Parenting · October 14, 2026

Forget the ghosts and jump scares. If you really want to scare a mom, just show her the laundry that’s been sitting in the dryer for three days, the clock hitting 5 PM when she hasn’t even thought about dinner, or a school email reminding her that tomorrow is a special dress-up day. I saw the haunted house trend going around on Instagram and knew I had to make a motherhood version because some of the scariest things in my life these days have absolutely nothing to do with Halloween.

Motherhood is funny like that. You can spend an entire morning cleaning the house, only for it to look like you haven’t touched a single thing twenty minutes later. You finally get a chance to sit down, and that’s exactly when the baby decides she needs you. And don’t even get me started on the never-ending question of what’s for dinner. Between school drop-offs, baseball practices, taking care of three kids, and trying to keep up with work, there are days when I feel like I’m constantly moving but somehow my to-do list keeps getting longer. Then there’s my Amazon order history sitting right next to my bank statements, which might actually be the scariest thing of all.

But here’s the thing about motherhood. For every overwhelming moment, there’s something so incredibly sweet waiting right alongside it. There are little arms reaching up for hugs, random “I love yous” in the middle of the day, belly laughs coming from the other room, and sleepy little faces that just want one more kiss before bed. Sometimes those moments happen right in the middle of the chaos, when the laundry is piled up, the kitchen is a mess, and I’m wondering how I’m going to get everything done. And somehow, those are the moments that remind me why I love this life so much.

I think it’s okay to admit that motherhood can be exhausting while also knowing it’s one of the greatest joys of my life. I can love being home with my kids and still wish someone else would figure out dinner. I can miss having a quiet house while knowing that one day I’ll miss all the noise. Both things can be true. The days aren’t always picture-perfect, and I’m definitely not the mom who has everything together all the time. But I’m learning that the beautiful parts of motherhood aren’t waiting for everything to be clean, organized, and checked off the list. They’re happening right in the middle of it all.

So yes, my version of a haunted house might be filled with overflowing laundry baskets, unfinished to-do lists, and someone calling “MOM!” the second my head hits the pillow. But it’s also filled with laughter, hugs, little voices, and so much love. And I wouldn’t trade those things for anything.

The chaos is real, but so is the joy. And I hope I never get so caught up in everything that needs to get done that I forget to enjoy the little people who make this house a home.
